Two men have been charged with the alleged abduction, sexual assault, and strangulation of a 12-year-old girl in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The incident, which reportedly took place on the evening of 22 July, has prompted concern within the local community and renewed calls for transparency in high-profile criminal investigations.

Ahmad Mulakhil, aged 23, has been accused of raping the child. His co-defendant, Mohammad Kabir, also 23, faces charges of aiding and abetting rape, as well as intentional strangulation. The alleged assault occurred on Cheverel Street between 8:30 p.m. and 9:45 p.m.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage reportedly shows an individual walking towards the scene around the time of the incident.

Kabir was arrested in Nuneaton on 31 July and appeared before Coventry Magistrates’ Court on 1 August. Both men are set to appear at Warwick Crown Court on 26 August. Warwickshire Police have confirmed that a fast-moving investigation began immediately following the report of the offence.

Residents have expressed concern and frustration over the lack of detailed information about the suspects. However, Warwickshire Police stated that they are following national guidance regarding disclosures. A spokesperson said: “Once someone is charged with an offence, we follow national guidance. This guidance does not include sharing ethnicity or immigration status.”

The police further stressed their commitment to building a strong legal case. “We work to hold offenders to account and will always do everything in our power to present a robust case to the courts and protect the integrity of court proceedings.”

In response to public concern, the force released additional context about its communication strategy during such investigations. “When something significant happens, we brief these partners and local elected officials on the circumstances of the crime, the investigation, the work being undertaken to arrest those responsible and how local people and partners can help a concerned community,” the spokesperson said.

They added that certain information is shared with discretion, particularly when it is considered sensitive or could impact future court proceedings. “Where relevant, sensitive information around locations, details of the crime and policing activity to catch offenders can be shared, with a warning that this is sensitive or confidential information and disclosure by those being briefed could affect future court hearings.”

The case has drawn public attention in the wider debate over police transparency, victim protection, and the handling of serious offences involving minors. As the case progresses, further details are expected to be presented during the Crown Court proceedings later this month.
