UK Cabinet Recalled as Starmer Faces Growing Demands on Gaza and Palestine

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer will reconvene his cabinet next week to address the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza and growing political pressure to recognise a Palestinian state. He maintains that any formal recognition must be part of a negotiated peace process.

Starmer is preparing to recall his cabinet from summer recess, with the Gaza crisis expected to dominate discussions. This move follows calls from over 220 Members of Parliament (MPs) across party lines, including Labour, Conservative, and Liberal Democrat representatives, for the United Kingdom to recognise Palestinian statehood.

Despite these demands, Starmer has made it clear that recognition should not be issued as a symbolic act. He argues it must be used at a time of “maximum utility” to help secure a long-term peace.

The humanitarian conditions in Gaza have worsened significantly, with reports of severe shortages of food, medicine, and basic aid. Starmer has described the situation as “unspeakable and indefensible”, as increasing numbers of civilians, including children, suffer from hunger and malnutrition.

The UK, in coordination with France and Germany, has called on Israel to ease restrictions on humanitarian deliveries, agree to a ceasefire, and release hostages. While France has announced its intention to formally recognise a Palestinian state during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly session, Britain remains cautious. Ministers have made clear that any such step must contribute to a broader two-state peace framework.

Complicating the matter is the diplomatic backdrop. With US President Donald Trump currently in Scotland, the UK government is likely weighing its position against the backdrop of its traditionally close alignment with American foreign policy.

Tensions are also emerging within Starmer’s cabinet. Prominent figures such as London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Health Secretary Wes Streeting have called for immediate recognition. Foreign Secretary David Lammy has gone further, labelling Israel’s aid blockade as “grotesque” and urging the establishment of sustained land access routes into Gaza.

By summoning ministers back during the summer recess, Starmer is signalling that the situation demands urgent attention, while also reinforcing his government’s preference for a deliberate and strategic approach. The UK remains committed to a two-state solution, but under Starmer’s leadership, recognition of Palestinian statehood will not be rushed for political convenience.
