UK, Canada, and Allies Sanction Israeli Ministers Over Incitement of Violence

On June 10, 2025, the United Kingdom, alongside Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway, imposed sanctions on Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, citing their roles in inciting violence against Palestinians and supporting the expansion of settlements in the West Bank. These sanctions, which include travel bans and asset freezes, are unprecedented measures against sitting Israeli cabinet members and reflect growing international concern over Israel’s policies in the occupied territories.

The sanctions target Ben-Gvir, Israel’s National Security Minister, and Smotrich, the finance minister, both of whom lead far-right parties within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government. Ben-Gvir has faced criticism for his inflammatory rhetoric, including past support for extremist groups and calls for provocative changes to sensitive religious sites. Smotrich has been condemned for remarks suggesting that starving Gazans might be “justified and moral” and for promoting the expansion of settlements in the West Bank, actions widely deemed illegal under international law.

The UK’s Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, emphasized that the sanctions were a response to the ministers’ incitement of violence and not a broader action against the Israeli government. He reaffirmed the UK’s support for a two-state solution and condemned the violence in the West Bank as unacceptable. The sanctions were coordinated without prior notice to Israel, underscoring the seriousness of the international community’s concerns.

The Israeli government strongly condemned the sanctions, with Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar calling them unacceptable. Prime Minister Netanyahu also denounced the measures, which he views as an affront to Israeli sovereignty. The United States, under Secretary of State Marco Rubio, criticized the sanctions, warning that they could undermine efforts to achieve a ceasefire and support for Israel. The U.S. has distanced itself from the sanctions, urging the UK and its allies to focus on confronting Hamas.

These developments highlight the increasing international pressure on Israel amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the West Bank. The sanctions reflect a growing willingness among Western nations to hold Israeli officials accountable for actions that are seen as exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and undermining prospects for peace. As the situation continues to evolve, the international community’s response will likely play a significant role in shaping the future of the Israeli Palestinian conflict.
