UK Faces High Court Challenge Over Arms Exports to Israel Amid Gaza Conflict

The UK High Court has begun hearings on a legal challenge filed by human rights organizations Al-Haq and the Global Legal Action Network (GLAN) against the British government’s continued export of F-35 fighter jet components to Israel. The organizations argue that these exports breach both domestic and international law and could implicate the UK in war crimes. Although the UK government suspended about 30 of its 350 arms export licenses in September due to concerns over violations of international humanitarian law, it made exceptions for parts related to the F-35, which the rights groups believe were excluded to maintain support for Israel.

The case is particularly significant given the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where violence has led to over 52,800 reported deaths since hostilities resumed in March 2025. Campaigners argue that the UK’s continued arms exports, especially parts for the F-35, are contributing to the escalation of violence and potential violations of international law. They contend that the UK has both a legal and moral obligation to stop these exports to prevent complicity in war crimes. The UK government, however, defends its stance by emphasizing the importance of maintaining international obligations and ensuring security, particularly within NATO.

In response, Oxfam has expressed strong support for the legal challenge, calling on the UK government to honor its international legal obligations by halting all arms sales to Israel. Helen Stawski, Oxfam’s Head of Policy, criticized the UK’s decision to continue exporting F-35 components, labeling it as morally wrong and contrary to the UK’s legal responsibilities. Oxfam has seen the devastating impact of the conflict on civilians in Gaza and urges the UK to take immediate action to avoid further escalation and potential violations of international law. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for the UK’s future arms export policies.
