No Laptops, No Talking: Brussels Tells Tech Bureaucrats to Mind Their Manners

In a move that has raised eyebrows within Brussels’ digital corridors, senior officials at the European Commission’s DG CONNECT have been issued a directive emphasizing traditional decorum in meetings. A memo obtained by POLITICO outlines expectations for mid-level and senior staff attending internal sessions, including mandates to dress formally, men are specifically instructed to wear a tie, and to use pen and paper for notetaking, eschewing electronic devices.

The directive, reportedly stemming from feedback by Director-General Roberto Viola and aides to Digital Commissioner Henna Virkkunen, also advises that attendees refrain from speaking during meetings unless directly addressed. This emphasis on traditional meeting etiquette has sparked discussions about the balance between maintaining professionalism and embracing modern, flexible working practices.

While some view this move as a step towards restoring order and discipline in high-level discussions, others question whether such measures are in tune with the evolving dynamics of contemporary work environments, where digital tools and informal communication styles are increasingly prevalent.
