Peace on Hold: Zelenskky Demands Ceasefire Before Talks with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that Ukraine is open to engaging in peace talks with Russia, but only on the condition of a full and unconditional ceasefire. His remarks come in response to a proposal from Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold negotiations in Istanbul on May 15. Zelenskyy made it clear that Ukraine will not participate in any dialogue unless Russia first halts all military operations, including drone, missile, and sea-based attacks. He emphasized that a genuine ceasefire is the first and necessary step toward meaningful and lasting peace.

The international community has largely backed Zelenskyy’s position. At a recent summit in Kyiv, leaders from more than 30 countries, including the United States, France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom, called for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire starting May 12. They issued a joint warning to Moscow, threatening severe new sanctions on Russia’s energy and financial sectors if the Kremlin refuses to comply. U.S. President Donald Trump voiced cautious support for the initiative, urging Russia to show its commitment to ending the war by agreeing to the ceasefire terms.

Russia, however, has rejected these conditions. The Kremlin insists that any talks must first address what it calls the “root causes” of the war, and it is waiting for a briefing from the United States before responding further to the ceasefire proposal. Meanwhile, Russian military strikes have continued across Ukrainian territory, including recent drone attacks, casting doubt on Moscow’s willingness to de-escalate. The situation remains tense and hopes for diplomatic progress hinge on whether Russia is prepared to pause hostilities and engage in good faith negotiations.
