Putin and Trump Decline to Attend Peace Talks with Ukraine’s Zelenskyy

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declined to attend the upcoming peace talks in Istanbul with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Instead, Moscow will be represented by a delegation led by presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky, who previously led similar talks in 2022 that failed due to Russia’s maximalist demands. Notably, top Russian diplomats Sergey Lavrov and Yuri Ushakov will not be present at the negotiations.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who had suggested attending the talks if Putin did, has also decided not to participate, citing scheduling conflicts. However, he expressed support for the peace efforts and appointed a team to engage in negotiations on his behalf .

President Zelenskyy remains open to dialogue but emphasizes that meaningful negotiations require the direct involvement of President Putin, given the centralized decision-making in Russia. He has proposed a 30-day ceasefire as a starting point for discussions, but Russia continues to reject such proposals, wary that they might benefit Ukraine militarily.

The absence of key leaders at the peace talks raises questions about the potential for a lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict. While international calls for direct negotiations continue, the effectiveness of the upcoming talks remains uncertain without the participation of the principal parties involved.
