Saudi Arrests Surge as Authorities Target Illegal Labor and Residency Violations

Saudi Arabia has arrested nearly 16,000 individuals in a week-long nationwide crackdown aimed at tackling violations of residency, labor, and border security laws. The operation, which took place from October 26 to November 1, 2024, saw authorities detain 16,695 people in total. Of those arrested, more than 10,500 were found to be living in the country without the proper permits, while nearly 4,000 had breached border security regulations. The crackdown also targeted individuals attempting to enter or exit Saudi Arabia illegally, particularly those from Ethiopia and Yemen.

The Saudi Ministry of Interior has issued strong warnings about the penalties for aiding or facilitating violations of residency and labor laws. Individuals found guilty of assisting violators, whether by transporting, sheltering, or helping them enter the kingdom illegally—can face severe consequences, including long prison sentences, heavy fines, and confiscation of property. These measures are part of a broader initiative to ensure stricter enforcement of the kingdom’s regulations as it continues its push toward economic and social reforms under Vision 2030.

As of the latest updates, 49,890 individuals are facing legal proceedings related to their violations. Authorities have already deported more than 8,600 people, and many others are in the process of being sent back to their home countries.
